Beating butter and sugar
Beat in 1 cup of the flour, oats, cinnamon, baking soda and pecans until well mixed and crumbly.
Press half of the crumbly mixture in the bottom of the pan and press down to form a crust. Keep the rest of the mixture for topping.
This forms the base of the squares
Slice the apples and spread over the crust in the baking dish.
Apples on top of crust
In a small saucepan, heat ¾ cup caramel topping and ¼ cup flour. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly. Boil about 1 minute or until the mixture thicken slightly. At this stage I HAD to stop and clean out the saucepan as a special treat!
Mixture should look like this
Drizzle this over the apples
Caramel mixture drizzled as evenly as possible
Sprinkle the reserved crumbly mixture on top of this.
Now ready to bake
Bake 35-40 minutes or until the top is a golden brown.
Mixture now baked
Cool for about 30 minutes before serving as it will break up less if you do this.
Sliced after 30 minutes
Top with ice cream and caramel topping if desired, and EAT.
