Turn a chocolate cupcake into a cute and delicious Christmas treat with a tree on top!

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Makes: 12 servings

To make the cupcakes

100g butter
2/3 cup caster sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
2 eggs
1 cup self raising flour
1/3 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate soda
1/2 cup milk

To decorate
200g of butter
6 cups of icing sugar
1/2 cup of milk
Green food dye
Icing sprinkles, edible cake dust, edible stars.

Preheat the oven to 160 C. Line a cupcake baking tray with patty pans.

In a mixing bowl, beat together the sugar and butter until pale and creamy.

Add the vanilla and eggs, beating one at a time until just combined.

Add half of the flour, the cocoa and bicarb soda. Stir to combine.

Add half the milk, stir to combine, then stir in the remaining flour, then the remaining milk to form a smooth, chocolatey batter.

Spoon cupcake batter evenly between cupcake patties.

Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked when tested with a skewer. Allow the cupcakes to cool on a wire rack.

To form the trees on top. Take one cupcake, remove it from its patty pan, and slice it into 6 pieces. Do this for every 6 trees you are making.

Beat together the butter, icing sugar, milk, and food dye to form green icing.

Top each cupcake with a dollop of icing.

Place a sliced cupcake piece on top to form the base layer of the icing tree. This will help give the tree a pointed shape, without having to use solid icing.

Pipe green icing around the centre chocolate piece to form tree shapes.

Decorate each tree with sprinkles and stars.
