Crispy Black Gram Fritters

Black Grams Fritters is a very popular evening or tea-time snack in South India. It is very crispy and tasty to relish with chutney or sauce.



Ingredients
2 cups of Split Black Lentils (Urad Dal)



2-3 red chillies
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp black grams
1 tsp pigeon pea



Chopped coriander
Salt to taste
Oil for frying

Method
Wash the black lentils (Urad Dal) thoroughly and soak it in enough water for at least 2 hours.
Drain the excess water and grind the dal adding very little water, to make a smooth batter. Keep it aside for 10-15 minutes.



Heat 1 tsp oil in a frying pan and add red chillies, mustard seeds, black grams and pigeon pea and roast it till the ingredients turns golden brown in color and give a nice aroma. Allow it to cool for a few minutes. Now grind them into a fine powder.



Add chopped onions, coriander leaves and the powder (prepared in the above step) to the batter and mix it gently.



Take some oil in a pan and heat it till it becomes medium hot. Take about 1 tsp of the mixed batter and drop it into the oil slowly so that the batter does not stick to it.



Transfer the fritters in the pan, one by one, and shallow fry them till they get a brownish tinge. Keep turning them while frying.



Transfer the fritters to the tissue paper to remove the excess oil and serve it hot with the coriander chutney or sauce. The fritters may be even enjoyed on its own.
