Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. Add butter and rub into the dry ingredients with your hands until mix is slightly crumbly.
Stir in dates.
Mix milk and egg in a small jug.
Gradually add milk and egg to flour mixture, mixing until dough is just combined.
Kneed dough on a lightly floured surface for about 30 seconds (don't kneed too much or the scones will be tough!) and roll into 8 round scones. Place on a lined tray, brush lightly with milk and bake for 10 -15 mins or until golden.
