Healthy Butter Chicken ( Without Cream)

Butter chicken

I am sure many of us love butter chicken. Whenever we think of butter chicken we think about the smooth creaminess of the delicious butter chicken sauce. Many of us are healthy eaters, if you are avoiding butter chicken because you are a healthy eater then here is the solution. Yes, you can cook butter chicken without the cream and still achieve same thickness and taste of the sauce. How? Please read my recipe below.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Makes: 4 servings


For the chicken marinade

500g chicken breast
2 teaspoon garlic paste
2 teaspoon ginger paste
1 tablespoon of Garam Masala powder
2 tablespoons of Tandoori Chicken BBQ spice (by Shan)
1/2 teaspoon of saffron powder ( I used Mahrajah's Choice)
2 tablespoons of yogurt

For the sauce

1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp oil
1 onion thinly sliced
200g can diced tomatoes or alternately you can use tomato puree
2 1/2 tbsp flour
1 cup water
Salt to taste
1/2 teaspoon sugar
Chopped coriander for garnishing

Wash the chicken breast and cut them into small curry pieces.
Pat dry the chicken pieces with paper towel.
To marinated add ginger paste, garlic paste, Tandoori chicken BBQ spice, yogurt, garam masala.
Make sure the chicken is marinated for over an hour
Add oil and butter to the saucepan.
When the oil is heated add sliced onions. Saute onions until brown.
Add marinated chicken. When the chicken becomes light brown gradually start adding the diced can tomato.
Add salt and sugar.
Cook for another 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes add 1 cup of water.
After adding water start adding the flour, stiring thoroughly to ensure there are no lumps. This flour will make the sauce thick and creamy.
Cook until chicken is ready.
Sprinkle chopped coriander on top.

Serve it with warm Basmati rice
