This may take a little more time than buying a pizza base but it is far more rewarding, delicious and cost effective.
Preparation Time: 2 hours (with proving)
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Serves: Makes 1 large pizza
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups of plain flour
3/4 cup of lukewarm water
7 grams of dried yeast (about 2 teaspoons)
1 tablespoon of sugar
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
Method
In a large bowl, combine the flour and the salt.
Mix the water, sugar and the yeast together. Let this sit for 5 minutes for the yeast to activate. When it is bubbling add the oil.
Gradually combine it to the flour and mix until it comes away from the bowl and forms a ball. If it is too wet, just add a bit more flour.
Knead the dough for 10 minutes or until it is smooth and elastic. Lightly flour, and place it in a well oiled bowl with a tea towel on top to prove in a warm spot.
When the dough has doubled in size (about an hour), remove it from the bowl and lightly knead.
With a rolling pin, roll it out into a 30cm round. Use flour so the dough doesn't stick.
Heat oven to 230 degrees. Put on your favourite pizza sauce and toppings and bake for 12-15 minutes.
