Nannee's Steamed Pudding

This was my mother's recipe, simple and easy but an accompaniment to Sunday's roast dinners over fifty years and more. Rich, aromatic and satisfying.

Batter ready for spooning

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 120 minutes
Makes: 8 servings


Item 125 ml Lyles Golden Syrup
Item 125g softened butter
Item 100g caster sugar
Item 2 eggs
225g Self-raising flour
160ml milk
Extra Golden Syrup
Ice cream and or Vanilla custard to serve

Grease and flour a 1 litre steamer.

Pour Golden Syrup into the base of the steamer.


Using an electric beater cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.


Add eggs, one at a time, beating in between.

Alternating flour and milk, add in thirds, beating well between each and at the end.


•Spoon the mix onto the top of the syrup.

Batter ready for spooning

Seal the steamer with a sheet of baking paper and the clips, or tie off with string.

Place in a large saucepan and fill up to half way on the steamer with boiling water and boil for two hours, topping up the water as necessary.

•Remove from the water and set aside for 5 minutes before turning out on a plate.

•Serve with custard and or ice cream.
