The first known reference of Britain's famous blue cheese, stilton, is from 1722, but it was not until 1730 that is began to be sold commercially by a man called Cooper Thornhill. Today it is recognised as a Protected Food Name, and is only allowed to be produced in three UK counties: Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. Such is the status of Stilton.
I never used to like blue cheese; the thought of eating something mouldy seemed absurd, and I found the flavour too strong. As my tastebuds matured, however, it has now become one of my favourites.
My family and I are very partial to a walnut & stilton loaf made by Marks & Spencers
, so I thought I would try my hand at making my own.
Based on the brands I used, each slice is about 137 calories, and would make a wonderful accompaniment to an English breakfast with poached eggs, bacon, and baked beans. Check out some of my bread making tips
