A familiar favourite, the sausage roll is equally humble and delightful and even more so when its homemade and fresh out of the oven. Serve it alongside a quality tomato sauce for the perfect midweek lunch or party snack.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Makes: 12 servings

Ingredients
Olive oil
500g beef mince
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 medium carrot, grated
cup tomato sauce
cup stale breadcrumbs
2 sheets short-crust pastry, defrosted
1 egg, lightly beaten to glaze
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon cracked pepper

Method
Preheat oven to 180C (fan-forced).
Line one oven tray with baking paper.
Heat a dash of olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
Cook garlic, onion, carrot and cumin for about five minutes or until onion softens; stir when necessary.

Transfer from heat to a medium-sized bowl.
Add tomato sauce, breadcrumbs, mince, salt and freshly ground black pepper; mix well until combined.
Place a sheet of pastry on a board and cut in half.
Place of sausage mixture along the centre of each pastry half.
Brush one long side of pastry with egg.

Roll other side of pastry over to enclose the sausage mixture; cut into three pieces.

Repeat with remaining sausage mixture and pastry
Place sausage rolls onto prepared trays.
Brush rolls with egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Place in oven for 30 minutes or until pastry is golden.
Serve with quality tomato or BBQ sauce.
