Steamed Buns

Steamed buns are part of a traditional Chinese cuisine. There are two types of Chinese steamed buns; the first is called 'baozi', which is a round bun that contains various fillings such as pork or bean paste. The second is called 'mantou', which does not contain any filling, but is shaped like a crescent. I made my buns without following a recipe, and therefore, once I had finished, I discovered that I had combined the two versions together. My steamed buns are round like a baozi, but have no filling. For that reason, they taste best sliced, and accompanied with a condiment of your choice. Traditionally steamed buns have a savoury filling, but I found that they taste lovely with strawberry jam. Based on the brands I used, each bun is about 80 calories.

Preparation Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
Cooking Time: 40 minutes
Makes: 8 servings

Ingredients
250g white bread flour
1tbsp Truvia sweetener (or caster sugar if you prefer)
1 tsp fast action yeast
1/4 tsp salt
125ml water

Method



Mix all the ingredients together to form a wet dough.



Knead the dough for ten minutes, then prove for about an hour.



Divide the dough into eight balls.



Steam the dough balls over a pan of boiling water and simmer for forty minutes (you'll probably need to do them in batches).
