Baked Bacon in Maple Syrup on an Egg and Cheese Toastie

There are several ways I have made this combination of food, and this time I made it as a toastie.

Previously I have put it between two slices of bread and put it in the sandwich press, however I thought maybe not everyone has a sandwich press, and this version is also very delicious, and has slightly less bread.

I have used half a round roll as I had one left over, however a slice of bread would work just as well.

Alternatively you could use two slices of bread and cook it in a frypan with butter on the outside of the bread.

No matter how you assemble it, these ingredients are a lovely taste sensation when mixed together! The slight sweetness of the baked bacon is delightful with the cheese and egg.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Makes: 1 serving

Bottom half of a roll
2 slices of shortcut bacon
2 - 3 tsp maple syrup
1 egg
2 slices cheese
Bit of butter

  • Preheat oven to 175 ° fan forced.

  • Put the bacon on baking paper or on a rack and bake for about 10 minutes.
  • I always use short cut bacon as there is little fat on it

  • Pour the maple syrup over the bacon and baste both sides with it.

  • Return it to the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes or until it starts to brown.

  • Meanwhile fry an egg in a bit of butter in a non stick pan for a few minutes.

  • I turned the egg over so the yolk would be slightly firmer and not run everywhere when I bit into it.
  • I turned off the heat before turning the egg over

  • Meanwhile, toast one side of the roll under the grill.

  • Put a slice of cheese on to the untoasted side of the roll.

  • Add the bacon.

  • Put the egg on top of this.

  • Top with another slice of the cheese.

  • Put back under the grill and grill until the cheese has melted and is starting to brown.

  • EAT!
