Bisi Bele Bhaat - Hot Lentil Rice

‘Bisi Bele Bhaat’ or ‘Hot Lentil Rice’ is a very popular one pot South Indian dish originating from the state of Karnataka. The dish can be had all by itself and offers a very delicious and a nutritious meal as it has a host of vegetables.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Makes: 7-8 servings

1 cup rice
1 cup pigeon peas
Chopped vegetables such as onion, carrot, capsicum, french beans, tomato (You may add more vegetables of your choice)
Finely chopped coriander leaves
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 tsp ghee
1 pinch asafetida
Tamarind (lemon sized)

Ingredients for Bisi bela bhaat powder
1 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp shredded coconut
1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
4-5 red chillies
1 tsp black gram
1 tsp bengal gram


Preparation of powder
Roast all the ingredients as mentioned above (for bisi bela bhaat powder) on a very low flame, until they turn a golden brown in color.

Leave to cool and then grind to a fine powder.

Preparation of Main Dish
Soak a tamarind (of the size of a lemon) in hot water, for about 10 minutes. Once it is fully soaked, squeeze the tamarind juice out of it.

Add some ghee in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds and asafetida to it.
Once the mustard seeds start to splutter, add all the vegetables to it.
Let it cook for 5 minutes.

Mix the rice and pigeon pea and wash them thoroughly.

Add the washed rice and pigeon pea to the cooker. Mix it gently with the vegetables.
Add some salt to it, as per your taste.

Now add tamarind juice and 5 glasses of water.
Add the ‘bisi bela bhaat powder’ and mix all the ingredients properly.

Close the lid of the cooker and allow the dish to be cooked for at least 3-4 whistles of the pressure cooker.

Open the cooker and garnish the cooked rice with coriander leaves and the dish is ready to be served hot.
