Black Forest Gateau Inspired Trifle
The inspiration for this particular trifle comes from the black forest gateau. Traditionally this German dessert contains layers of chocolate sponge with cream and cherries. For this recipe the cherries have been replaced with raspberries. You can still use cherries if you prefer. Fresh, glace or maraschino cherries will all compliment this recipe.
Black Forest Gateau Style Trifle
Preparation Time: 60 minutes (Extra refrigeration time may be required)
Makes: 8 small servings
Ingredients
Raspberry flavoured jelly mixture
Instant custard powder
300ml double cream
Chocolate cake
Coco powder
Chocolate sprinkles
Raspberries (or cherries)
Glace cherries and maraschino cherry
Method
Cut the chocolate cake into small cubes that will fit into the dessert glasses. Individually wrapped cake bars can be used.
Place the cake pieces into the glasses.
Prepare the jelly as instructed (each product requires different amounts of water). This particular brand requires 400ml of boiling water to be mixed with the jelly crystals.
Stir the jelly mixture and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Evenly distribute this into the glasses leaving room for a layer of custard and cream.
Cool at room temperature for 10 minutes then refrigerate for at least 25 minutes. If you do have extra time keep them in the fridge for at least an hour, the jelly will have a better texture.
Prepare the custard mixture. Instant custard was used for this recipe so the only thing required was boiling water. The type of custard used depends on your personal preference. If you have custard powder that requires hot milk then check out this fruit trifle recipe for the preparation method.
Once you have mixed together the custard add 2 tbsp of coco powder and mix well.
Allow this to cool for a few minutes. Pour an equal amount onto the jelly in each glass. Allow this to cool at room temperature for 5 minutes then refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.
Whisk 300ml of double cream. Using a piping bag decorate each trifle with the whisked cream. Add a raspberry on top (or cherry). Decorate with chocolate sprinkles.
The trifles can be eaten straight away however, the cream will have warmed up slightly during the whisking process. To get the best taste, refrigerate the trifles for at least 30 minutes.
Serve and enjoy!
If you find you have extra ingredients you can use another small glass to make an extra trifle. In addition to the chocolate cake you can add a raspberry or cherry to the jelly, for an extra touch. If you would like some decoration ideas then check out my article
