Chili Mushroom with Tomato and Celery

This is an Indo-Chinese style gravy with mushroom and hot chili sauce. This makes a great side dish.

I used sriracha sauce but hot chili sauce also works great. Mushrooms, when cooked in spicy tomato-celery based gravy make it really delicious. The curry goes well with bread or flour tortillas.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Makes: 4 servings

Ingredients
250g button mushroom
1/2 onion, chopped
1/4 cup celery, finely chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped
2 green chilli
2 tbsp sriracha chili sauce/ hot chili sauce
1/2 tsp yellow mustard sauce
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp soy sauce
2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup green onion, chopped
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp fennel seed
Salt to taste
Curry leaves

Method
  • Wash and cut each mushroom into 4 pieces. Keep aside.

  • Heat olive oil in a pan. Crackle the fennel seed. Add onion and celery and saute until onion is translucent.

  • Add green chilli, turmeric powder, chili/ sriracha sauce, mustard sauce, soy sauce and curry leaves into the pan. Stir fry for a minute.

  • Add chopped tomato into it. Add salt and cook until you can mash tomatoes. Now add water and bring to boil.

  • Add cornstarch-water mix. Mix well and cook until the gravy becomes thick.

  • Now add the mushroom pieces into the gravy. Cover and cook on medium heat until mushrooms are well cooked, 5-8 minutes.

  • Remove from heat. Add the chopped green onion and stir well.

  • Serve hot.
