Chinese Five Spiced Coffee

Chinese Five Spiced Coffee

Flavoured coffees have been mega popular for sometime now. Vanilla, caramel, hazelnut coffees are to be had at a Starbucks or Gloria Jeans although coffee puritans probably stay well clear of them.

Visiting trendy Bar H at Surry Hills recently, I noticed they had a Star Anise coffee on the menu. This triggered off my creative juices and frankly, I haven’t stopped experimenting with different flavours since.

There’s no need for any fancy cordials. Want vanilla coffee? Add a few drops of vanilla essence to your brew. Caramel iced coffee? Add a tablespoon of caramel ice cream topping.

But it was the Star Anise that got me going. Star Anise, with its liquorices characteristics, is one of the spices in Chinese Five Spice, along with cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan pepper and fennel seeds.

What if I added a teaspoon of this to a percolator or coffee maker?

The following recipe uses a plunger, but I’ve tried the stove top method and espresso machines and it works well in all of them.

Coffee will never be the same again.

Preparation Time: 2 minutes
Cooking Time: 5 minutes
Makes: 2 servings

Ingredients
2 large tbsp espresso coffee
1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
Enough water for two cups of coffee
Warmed milk to taste.

Method
• Warm the plunger first by adding hot tap water for a few seconds and them empty.

• Add coffee and Chinese five spice powder to the plunger.

• Add hot boiled water to the plunger

• Let the plunger steep for a few minutes.

• Pour the coffee into cups and add milk and sugar to taste.
