Chocolate Chia Surprise

Chia seeds (salvia hispanica) are the highest plant based source of Omega 3 and are very high in fiber, protein and iron. These tiny seeds can be black, grey or white and were originally cultivated during pre-Colombian times by the Aztec peoples of Mexico and Guatemala. Chia Seeds can easily be consumed raw, and this recipe would make a perfect sweet treat for any vegetarians or vegans (just make sure you substitute the honey for maple syrup). This ends up tasting exactly like chocolate custard and is also super healthy for you.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 45 minutes in the fridge
Makes: 6 servings

Ingredients
2 tablespoons chia seeds
1 cup rice milk (or soy or cow's milk)
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
2 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup)
1 tablespoon sultanas (optional)

Ingredients for Chia Surprise

Method

  • Combine the cocoa powder, sultanas and Chia seeds in a mixing bowl.

  • Black Chia Seeds

  • Add the milk and honey and mix all the ingredients together well.

  • Mix the dry ingredients

  • Allow the mixture to sit in the fridge for 45 minutes, so that the chia seeds can expand. They will absorb the liquid and become quite gelatinous.

  • Place the chocolate mixture in the fridge

  • Serve on its own in individual bowls, or with a fresh fruit salad on the side. Enjoy.

  • The Chia seeds will absorb the liquid
