I have had this meal at a cafe, only they made it in a French loaf.
I saw a lovely rustic loaf and just had to buy it! It was however, too big for the amount of cheeseburger that went into it, so although I used a crusty loaf, I would advise using a French loaf!
I accompanied this meal with my
Spinach Cakes.
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 40 minutes
Makes: 6 servings
Ingredients
450 g best mince
Bit less than ¼ cup onions, chopped
185 g can tomato soup
Bit of garlic salt
Loaf of bread - French loaf
125 g Velveeta or Kraft cheese, sliced
Method
Cook the onion in a frypan or wok for a few minutes, and then add the mince meat.
Chop it with a wooden spoon so that it does not form clumps, and cook for about 15 minutes. Drain any liquid that has accumulated, though if it is a good mince, there will not be much.
Add the soup, garlic salt, salt and pepper to taste, and simmer for about 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, chop about a third off the top of the bread.
Hollow out the actual bread on the bottom part of the loaf, leaving a very small amount only.
Preheat the oven to 180°/160° fan forced.
Spread the top large slice with butter.
Place the hollowed shell under the grill until it is just starting to go brown.
Take it out of the oven and fill with the meat mixture.
Top with the slices of cheese.
On a large tray, put the buttered side next to the meat filled bread, and bake till it is heated through and the top is slightly toasted.
Put the top back on the bread, and slice into wide slices, and serve.
