Avocado (143)      Questions (17)

I bought some lovely, local avocados from the farmers market this morning but they are still quite hard.

How do you ripen an avocado? Is there any way to speed up the process or do I just have to wait until it softens?

Sit them next to bananas as they accelerate the ripening process
I put them in a brown paper bag with a banana and it worked! Only took about 36 hours and the avos were soft enough to slice- but a bit more time would have been required to soften them enough to mash. Great tip!
Try putting them in a brown paper bag with a tomato.
When I buy a bag of them from Aldi, I put 1 of them in the fruit bowl on it’s own, & the rest of them in the veggie drawer in the fridge. I don’t like mine to ripen up all at the same time!

I used to work in a hotel, and the chef used to put the avocados in the flour bin to ripen.

Ripe bananas release ethylene, the hormone that triggers ripening in mature fruit. Place a couple of bananas in a closed paper bag with your under-ripe avocados...it will speed up the process.
put them in a brown paper bag, then put it in a warm cupboard. Works every time. Allow a couple of days.
Place the avocado in a paper bag with an apple and store at room temperature for 2-5 days until ripe!
Recently, unorganised and anxious to keep a commitment to provide an avocado dip, after discovering they were not ripe, l was relieved to discover my microwave experiment worked successfully. Managed to get the first one cut up, after adding the lemon juice, and rather desperate, l put it in the Micro for 10 or 20 secs. lt worked!!!!!! So the next one, which l couldn't even peel, went in for 20 secs, whole. That also worked beautifully, and l received many compliments for my dip. Phewwww!
Put the abaca do in a brown paper bag in a dark cupboard,a pantry would be good.

Easy solution put one into a brown paper bag with banana(s) and close .It may take a day or 2, but at least you can stagger your unripe avocado's!
I have the opposite problem-A friend gave me some avocados-how do I SLOW down their ripening?
Best advice I ever got was to wrap each one in newspaper and put in a dark cupboard for a couple days til they ripen.
