Japanese Style Beef and Rice
This was a delicious meal with steak cooked on the barbecue. I did this as I like the brown on the outside and the rare on the inside and nothing has that taste of a barbecue. You could, however, cook it in a frypan if you prefer
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 25 minutes
Serves: 1 - 2
Ingredients
350 g sirloin steak
2 tbsp soy sauce
Juice of ½ lemon
½ tsp sesame oil
½ cup rice
About ¾ cup water
½ tbsp rice vinegar
½ tsp sugar
½ tsp salt
1 tbsp oil
½ red chilli, thinly sliced, or to taste
1 spring onion, thinly sliced
Coriander - to taste
½ Lebanese cucumber, deseeded and thinly sliced
1 tbsp sesame seeds
Method
Put the soy, lemon juice and sesame oil in a zip-lock bag.
Add the steak, seal and rub the marinade into the steak. Leave for about 10 minutes to marinate.
Meanwhile, rinse the rice well and put in a pan with cold water.
Bring to the boil and boil for about 6 minutes on low.
Remove from the heat, cover and leave to stand for about 10 minutes. You may need to add a bit more water at this stage as it will go on soaking in the water for this time.
Mix the vinegar, sugar and salt in a small bowl and pour over the rice. Fluff it up with a fork, cover and put aside.
Light the barbecue, and cook the piece of steak for about 2 minutes on each side on quite a high flame. Pour some of the marinades over it when it is cooked.
Slice the steak thinly.
Mix the chilli, spring onion and coriander in a small dish.
Put the rice in a bowl or bowls and top with the cucumber.
Add the beef over the top.
Add the chilli mixture, and sprinkle the sesame seeds on top and serve.
