Mango Sago Dessert

Mango Sago Dessert is an Asian sweet that originates from Hong Kong. Made using the key ingredients -mango, sago and evaporated or coconut milk. You can find them served in Chinese Yum Cha restaurants when the dessert trolley comes around. But it's easy to make so you can give it a try at home!

For those who have not heard of sago before, it is an edible starch that is obtained from tropical palm stems. It is used widely in Asian desserts and can be found at your local Asian grocers.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes, 2 hours refrigeration
Makes: 4 servings

100g sago
425g canned mango
100g caster sugar
200ml evaporated milk or coconut milk
100ml milk

Soak the sago in cold water for 15 minutes and drain. This will wash away some of the starch from the sago.

In a saucepan of boiling water add the sago and sugar.

Cook, stirring the sago over medium-high heat. When the sago becomes partially cooked (translucent) turn the heat off.

Cover with a saucepan lid and set aside, allowing the steam to cook the sago through.

When the sago is translucent, drain and run under cold water.

Process the mango until it becomes pureed.

Add the evaporated milk and milk.

Distribute the mixture evenly among the ramekins or bowls.

Add the sago and refrigerate for 1-2 hours until cool.

Serve cold with extra mango pieces if preferred.
