Baguettes are a trademark of France's food culture. The name for these long loaves of bread come from the Italian word bacchetta
, meaning 'wand' or 'baton' and can reach up to one metre in length.
Of course, we humble home bakers do not possess ovens one metre long, so here is a recipe for some mini baguettes.
Most baguettes you buy are white loaves, but using a sourdough mix, you get a deeper flavour and a very attractive rustic looking loaf. you can either make your own starter
or buy a ready made sourdough mix.
If you wish to be particularly indulgent, you can fill the baguettes with another iconic french food: brie.
