coffee ice cake

In seventeenth century Europe it was a common treat to have a slice of cake with your coffee, so it was only a natural progression that at some point the coffee would end up in the cake.

The combination of sweet and bitter works extremely well, especially with the coffee icing. Coarsely ground almonds also add extra texture.
