Raw Nut Butter
Nut butters are actually a high protein, tasty and versatile, good-fat rich snack, but the added sugar and salts (amongst other preservatives) found in commercial products, counter these beneficial nutrients.
Here is a simple recipe for making your own nut butters - you can use any nut, or even use a mix if you want to be really creative!
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Makes: 1.5 cups
Ingredients
2 cups of any nut, or a mix (you may wish to use activated nuts for the most pure result. See my recipe for activated nuts if desired.)
1 tablespoon oil (I use coconut oil for added omega-3 fatty acids and the subtle sweetness)
Method
In a food processor, blitz the nuts on high until a fine crumble is formed (about 2-3 minutes).
Add the oil to the mix, then continue to process, stopping to ensure a consistent mixture is being formed.
The butter can take anywhere between 10-20 minutes to be completely formed, depending on the nut used, so monitor accordingly. Add additional oil or even warm water for denser nuts if the mixture is too thick.
Once complete, set aside to cool before use. Then enjoy with fruit/ veggie sticks, on toast or in sandwiches, or even added to smoothies or cereal.
