Spicy Sautéed Bread Cubes

Sauteed Bread Cubes


Known as 'Bread Upma' traditionally, this is an evening snack or a breakfast option that can be made the previous day. The combination of the bread with the spices and onions gives a good flavour. The peas gives the extra crunch for every bite.

This recipe uses the sauteing techniques used in Indian cooking.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Makes: 2 servings

Ingredients
4 slices of white bread
2 tbsp Ghee
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp white lentils
1 tsp asafoetida
A few curry leaves
1 medium size onion cut length-wise
1 medium size tomato chopped
1/2 cup frozen baby peas
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
Salt to taste
Coriander for garnishing

Method
  • Cut the bread slices as cubes.

  • Bread cut lengthwise

    Bread cut again breadthwise


  • Heat some ghee in a pan and when it is hot add the mustard seeds, white lentils, turmeric powder and curry leaves. Be careful not to burn the white lentils.

  • Sauteing


  • To this add chopped onions and saute until they turn golden brown.

  • Chopped Onions


  • Now add ginger garlic paste and fry well until the raw smell goes.

  • Add the chopped tomato and saute until the tomato skin peels away.

  • Adding tomato


  • Add all the dry powders (chilli powder, cumin powder and coriander powder) and saute well until the spices blend with the onions and tomato.
  • Add the baby peas and saute until they are cooked or become soft.
  • Add the bread cubes along with 1 tsp of ghee and toss well to combine with the spices.

  • Bread Crumbs tossed in spices


  • Finally add some salt and toss again.

  • Serve with some coriander and tomato ketchup.
