Spicy Sautéed Bread Cubes
Sauteed Bread Cubes
Known as 'Bread Upma' traditionally, this is an evening snack or a breakfast option that can be made the previous day. The combination of the bread with the spices and onions gives a good flavour. The peas gives the extra crunch for every bite.
This recipe uses the
sauteing techniques used in Indian cooking.

Makes: 2 servings
Ingredients
4 slices of white bread
2 tbsp
Ghee
1 tsp
mustard seeds
1 tsp
white lentils
1 tsp
asafoetida
A few
curry leaves
1 medium size onion cut length-wise
1 medium size tomato chopped
1/2 cup frozen baby peas
1 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp ginger garlic paste
Salt to taste

Method
Cut the bread slices as cubes.

Heat some ghee in a pan and when it is hot add the mustard seeds, white lentils, turmeric powder and curry leaves. Be careful not to burn the white lentils.
Sauteing
To this add chopped onions and saute until they turn golden brown.

Now add ginger garlic paste and fry well until the raw smell goes.
Add the chopped tomato and saute until the tomato skin peels away.
Adding tomato
Add all the dry powders (chilli powder, cumin powder and coriander powder) and saute well until the spices blend with the onions and tomato.
Add the baby peas and saute until they are cooked or become soft.
Add the bread cubes along with 1 tsp of ghee and toss well to combine with the spices.

Finally add some salt and toss again.
Serve with some coriander and tomato ketchup.
