Steam Boat

My boyfriend and I had decided on making our Christmas dinner very unique. So we looked at traditional recipes from other cultures and this looked like the perfect meal!

A hot pot (steamboat) is an Asian meal that consists of a variety of ingredients that are mixed together and served in small portions.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes for the water, 5 minutes for the ingredients
Makes: Multiple servings (20-40)

400g chicken
400g salmon
400g tandoori lamb (marinated)
300g beef mince
300g prawns
5 carrots
300g mushroom
200g celery
1 tin (250-300g) baby corn
1 tin button mushrooms
2-3 spring onions
600g noodles (Maggi packets, crushed noodles, no spices)
Water for the slow cooker
Seafood cocktail
Satay sauce
Soy sauce

Slow cooker
Soup-slotted ladles
Bowls for dipping, placing the hot pot dish


Fill the slow cooker with water up to the brim and start heating up the water.

Chop up the different meats and fill each kind into medium-sized bowls.

Chop up the vegetables and fill each kind into separate medium-sized bowls.

Place the noodles into the slow cooker once the water is hot enough to cook it. Place lid on top so that the steam does not escape.

Place the ingredients of your choice into the ladles and make sure it's well-packed, leaving some space for the noodles.

Once ready, place the ladles into the slow cooker and immerse well enough to get a good chunk of noodles.

Remove from slow cooker after about 5 minutes (till the meats look cooked) and empty the contents of the ladle into a bowl.

Serve with dipping sauce (satay sauce/seafood cocktail) or soy sauce.

Hi alesi!
You can alternatively cook the veggies first and then do the meats as a second helping, OR you could steam the veggies and just use the slow cooker for the meats! :)
I love the idea of using my slow cooker like this, but does it really work Xarah? Vegies usually take ages in the slow cooker.
