The growing season of asparagus runs through into June in England, but May is the absolute best time to pick and enjoy asparagus. If you have a pick-your-own farm nearby, I'd definitely recommend the experience of truly fresh asparagus.
There are lots of ways you can prepare and enjoy asparagus, but if it's a fresh as mine was, then simply steamed is the best way to enjoy.
Rinse the asparagus to get rid of any grit or soil.
Rather than chop the woody ends off the asparagus, you can find the natural point easily. Hold the stalk with a thumb and finger, gently starting to bend the stalk. Move up until you reach the natural point where it snaps. That way you won't waste anything or have a tough end.
Heat a large pan of water with a steamer insert or use an electric steamer.
