Sweet and Sour Chicken Meatballs
These are easy to make and have a nice, unusual taste.
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 35 minutes
Serves: 10 balls
Ingredients
For the Sauce
1 tbsp oil
½ small shallot or onion, minced½ cup canned tomato sauce
½ cup dry red wine
1 tbsp honey
Juice of ½ lemon
1 tbsp white wine vinegar
¼ cup water
Bit of allspice
For the Meatballs
250 g minced chicken
1 clove garlic
½ small shallot, diced
1 very small egg
3 tbsp coriander or to taste
Under ¼ cup breadcrumbs
Bit of sriracha - optional
Olive oil
Method
Saute the onion in a tbsp oil over medium heat till tender. Add tomato sauce, wine and stir.
Then add the honey, lemon juice vinegar, water allspice and some salt and pepper.
Lower the heat to medium and let it simmer.
Meanwhile mix the chicken, garlic, onion, egg, coriander, breadcrumbs and the sriracha if using.
Form into small balls.
Heat a wok or fry pan over medium heat and add about 2 - 3 tbsp oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides.
Add them to the sauce and simmer for 20 minutes or until the sauce is thick and the meat is cooked through. Be careful that it does not boil dry and add water if it starts to.
Serve. I served with some mashed potato and home grown beans.
