Toffee Apples

TOFFEE APPLES - remember when we used to be able to buy these at many shops?

Nowadays they are so hard to find that I decided to make them myself.

They are not red as the bought ones are, as I did not want to add a food colouring as I could see no point!

It is a good way to get children to eat apples and even though I used large apples, it would be better if you used smaller ones for children!

The flavour of the tart apple and the sweet toffee is one of my favourite combinations

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Makes: 3 apples

Ingredients
3 apples of your choice
3 sticks
85 g sugar
10 g butter
25 g golden syrup
35 g water
½ tsp lemon juice

Method
  • Wash the apples with hot water to get the waxy coating off and dry thoroughly.

  • Put a "Paddle Pop" stick through each apple, pushing it down firmly.

  • Heat the sugar, golden syrup, butter, lemon juice and water in a pan.


  • Stir gently until the sugar has dissolved. Turn up the heat to high and boil rapidly. This will probably take about 5 - 10 minutes.


  • To test if the toffee is done, drop a few bits into iced water. If is is sticky, boil for a few more minutes, however if it turns brittle and breaks, then it is done.

  • Dip each apple into this hot toffee taking care not to burn yourself.

  • Pour the remaining toffee, if any is left, over the apples to try to get an even coating.

  • You can put the apples immediately into cold water to make the toffee set as it will not run down so much then, however I did not bother doing this.

  • Stand on paper until cold.


  • Eat and enjoy as I did and even though there is sugar in this, at least there is a healthy apple underneath!
  • Could not resist as soon as they were cool
