Traditional French Toast
French toast is one of those indulgent breakfasts that I relish on lazy days off. The perfect balance of sweetness and savoury, easy French toast is a quick way to start the day while presenting as a gourmet meal. Topped with fresh berries it is simply delicious.
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 4-6 minutes each
Serves: 4
Ingredients
8 slices of thick bread
2 eggs
1 cup milk
1 pinch salt
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 punnet blueberries
1/2 punnet strawberries
Butter
Method
Whisk eggs, milk, salt, sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon. Place into a shallow disk.
Dip bread into the mix, one slice at a time. Dip one side in and then flip quickly. You don't want the bread to sit in the mixture or it will ruin the toast and make it take longer to cook. Think coating the bread rather than submerging it.
Put half a tablespoon into a hot frying pan. Cook dipped bread 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Serve on a plate with washed, chopped strawberries and blueberries.
Troubleshooting tip - if your French toast ends up looking sloppy, you've dipped it for too long. Try again just very quickly dipping on either side and put immediately into a frying pan which has melted butter on it. Timing is everything with French Toast, so just keep persisting until you get it!
