Banana (187)      Question (20)

old bananas, brown bananas, over ripe bananas, what to do with old bananas

I used to make muffins with my over-ripe bananas even if I didn't feel like it because I didn't want to waste them. But a friend recently enlightened me - bananas can be cut up and frozen. I tried it and it worked a treat, now I have frozen banana pieces ready to use for baking or smoothies.

What do you do with your old bananas?

Bananas can be used as a substitute for butter or other fats when baking. That could be one way to use them up. If you have rabbits, rats, or mice, you could also give them to your pets as a treat.
Apart from putting them in muffins or blending frozen banana for smoothies, you can mash them and make banana fritters with ice cream or make banana pancakes. Another way is you can dipped cut up frozen banana into melted chocolate for a treat!
I just put them whole in their skins in the freezer until I collect enough for cakes etc
I always make banana bread. Simple, delicious, and great for lunches.
Yep, I agree. I generally tend to freeze any bananas that are getting past the point I'd eat fresh. I use them for making banana cupcakes, but they're perfect for smoothies. I love that I can use a frozen banana and I don't have to worry about adding ice, frozen yoghurt or ice cream to get a nice thick consistency.
Banana cake!
I cut up my banana skins and slightly bury them around my roses. They all look very healthy.
I love them in muffins or fudge or I freeze them too, then pop them in the blender for ice cream!
With over ripe bananas I usually make banana bread or smoothies. I never thought about freezing them, that's a really good idea!
Yes, I stumbled onto freezing bananas a little while back, and it was amazing! Suddenly opportunities to make all these yummy banana smoothies opened up, to complement my usual banana bread, banana muffins, or banana pancakes.
I tend to buy heaps of bananas and occassionally the kids will decide that they don't want them. So sometimes I get the same problem- overripe bananas! Banana bread is always a favourite and I have a recipe that freezes really well so I always have some on hand to stock up the lunch boxes or for morning tea.

I also freeze bananas on their own- but be sure to slice them prior to freezing if you want to use them for smoothies or quickly in baked goods. A whole frozen banana is like a brick :).
Whizz them up with some other fruit and make some bitesized frozen smoothie pops. They are so good, we make them nearly every day.

Yes, this is an excellent idea. It would be a shame to waste bananas just because they are getting close to being too ripe.

freeze them and make banana thick shakes by adding milk, peanut butter and nutella :)
You can make a guilt free dessert. Freeze the bananas, blend them with cocoa powder and sugar, Freeze it and serve. Sugar can be substituted with honey.
