Zebra Valentine's Day Cake

Valentine's day is a celebration of love and life.Here is a simple but fancy vanilla cake with chocolate icing that you can make for your loved one.Bake this cake and stay indoors for a cozy valentines day celebration. And for celebration in a relationship you don't need valentines day, just about any day would be romantic.

You could also change the shape of the tin and use the same techniques to bake this cake for another occasion.

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Cooking Time: 25-30 minutes
Makes: 8 servings

Ingredients for the cake
1/2 cup sugar
100 grams butter at room temperature
1 egg
1 teaspoons vanilla essence
3/4 cups plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup milk

Ingredients for the chocolate icing
1/2 cup icing sugar
30 grams butter at room temperature
2 tbsp cocoa powder

Ingredients for decorating the cake
1 piping bag
1 star nozzle (1m in Wilton)
Few 1inch paper strips

Method to make the cake
Beat the butter and sugar together till the butter becomes pale.
Add the egg and vanilla essence one by one and mix well.
Add the dry ingredients (flour and baking powder) little by little and mix well.
Finally add the milk and any colour that you prefer and mix.

Pour the cake mixture in a floured tin and bake the cake in the oven for 25-30 mins or until the skewer/toothpick comes out clean.

Leave the cake to cool in a wire rack.Meanwhile you can prepare the icing.

Method to make the chocolate icing
Beat the butter until it becomes pale.
Then add the icing sugar little by little.If you add all at once then there would be a icing sugar dust storm :)
Finally add the cocoa powder and mix well.

Prepare the icing bag by cutting the tip of the bag and insert a star nozzle piping tip.
Using a spatula, spoon in the chocolate icing into the piping bag.

Method to decorate the cake
Remove the cake from the cake tin and keep it on a working surface.
Cut 1 inch size paper strips and place it on the cake with 1 inch gap.

Now put 1-2 tbsp of icing sugar in a strainer and drizzle on the cake.
You will see that the icing sugar will fall only on the space where there is no paper leaving a zebra stripes effect on the cake.

In the space pipe the chocolate mix and place a sugar ball on each star or decorate as per preference.
